# Day 02 (For today, just be…)

” Today is the first day of the rest of my life

I awake as a child to see the world begin

On monarch wings and birthday wanderings

I want to put on faces, walk in the wet and the cold

And look forward to my growing old…”

The lyrics of this old song by John Denver have stayed with me for many many years. The first line there (a quote attributed to the famous drug rehabilitation reformist Charles Dederich) has been variously interpreted by many. As a teenager the idea embodied therein seemed vaguely romantic…almost exciting in the possibilities it held out! With the naïveté of youth i wondered what it would be like to live through a life-changing occurrence that would require you to pick up the pieces of your broken life and start anew…a clear before and after. Over the years life has had its fair share of ups and downs  but somehow no occasion seemed to warrant the finality of that statement,”Today is the first day of the rest of my life…”

Perhaps my inner soul is just not made for wallowing in the melodrama so often attached to tragedy and misfortune in our culture. Perhaps the universe has been kind enough to spare me an apocalyptic-like adversity. Increasingly i have come to believe that there is probably no before and after, there is only today, only this moment. Whatever the situation you find yourself in just choose to look at whatever bright spot you can find, just choose to live the moment as best as you can, just choose to BE…
