The first time i came across that word was in a magazine article some decades back.
What the article was about i don’t really recollect but i do remember that just reading the word and the way it sounded brought about an ‘inner-smile’…the one where your inner-self lights up even before the smile plays out on your lips. It seemed a ‘happy’ word and that association has always stayed.
It’s a coinage that is widely used in various fields from science and technology where innovations and discoveries sometimes happen by chance to biographies of famous people who stumble into their field of greatness through sheer coincidence. For a little bit of history (courtesy Google of course!) the word was first coined by Horace Walpole in 1754 in reference to a Persian fairy tale “The Three Princes of Serendip” (incidentally Serendip is an old Persian name for Sri Lanka!) where the princes were always “making discoveries by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of.” That’s what is special about serendipitous events—they are beyond cold logic and boring predictability…”fortunate happenstances” that perk up your life and take you down providential paths you wouldn’t have otherwise journeyed upon. It’s when you join the dots of such coincidences that the pattern of your life begins to emerge. So here’s an ode to ‘serendipity’ i stumbled upon on ‘Pinterest’ by a happy chance…
“There’s a beautiful thing in life you see,
that can be summed up in the word serendipity!
It can be found in the magic of coincidence,
and deep within synchronicity’s brilliance.
But for the most part it goes unseen,
people unaware of just what it means.
So look a little deeper at what is there,
and you can see the world does care.
For if possible when things line up,
the universe sends you a little luck!
That thing you need but haven’t got,
donated by a friend that wants it not.
Those green lights shining all the way,
so your journey completes without delay.
Arriving at a station with a minute to spare,
or the helping hand with that much needed repair.
They happen daily, such little things,
so remember to be thankful when the universe brings…
a little coincidence that lifts your day,
a little luck gifted your way.
For when you notice and see the link,
it brightens your life and brings into sync
The law of attraction, of gratitude for life
as blessed serendipity moves in to offset the strife…”
