# Day 276 (The ultimate answer…)

Sooner or later, this thought does strike every thinking individual ~ why are we here on this planet and for what. You can read countless philosophical treatises that seek to answer that question or you can read that delightful book by Douglas Adams, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”! There you will find a simple answer, the magical number ’42’ ~ the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything! The book tells you that the answer was calculated by an enormous supercomputer named Deep Thought (ha ha what else could it be named as?!) and that it took 7.5 million year for it to come up with that answer, by which time no one really knew what the question was!
Millions of fans have since then applied more deep thought on coming up with a theory about the significance of that number. It was a question Adams himself was asked innumerable times ~ what made him choose the number 42? Many theories were posited, from those that pointed out that 42 is 101010 in binary code, or that light refracts through a water surface by 42 degrees to create a rainbow, to those that sought to show that it was an influence of the book, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Adams himself quite ruined the fun when he dismissed these efforts of ascribing some deep, symbolic significance to the number with a simple answer that the number was a joke!! To quote his own words ~
“The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. There had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and i chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan Monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought ’42 will do’. I typed it out. End of story.”
Perhaps one shouldn’t really waste precious time and effort in looking for the ‘ultimate answer to life’. It’s an irreverent and flippant thought, but what if for our creator too, the universe just happened as a joke?!
